Why we started the Intelligent Garden

I first started gardening as a research student working on how plants grow. Then we bought a small holding in Shropshire for a while before we discovered computers and marketing. 20 years later we started selling plants on-line.

Expansion meant we needed premises - so we acquired a nursery with 2 acres of glasshouse and started growing organic vegetables again. By September 2008 we had our soil association certification and had started selling biological controls online.

Talking to people on farmer's markets I sense a real hunger for people to garden and produce their own food. And a real interest in local and pesticide free produce.

So we created the Intelligent Garden ito help you get the most from your garden by offering the knowledge, products and advice you need to work effectively with nature to release the intelligence in your garden.

About the Intelligent Garden

The Intelligent Garden is part of Free Spirits Ltd set up at the end of 2003.  We are based at Fletching Glasshouses in East Sussex from where we run several businesses. These include

Fletching Glasshouses. 2 acres of glasshouse which now grows organic vegetables for the local market. We achieved our Soil Association certificate in September 2008.

Ladybird Plantcare. Supplies a range of biological controls and predators to combat common garden pests such as slugs, caterpillars, aphids, vine weevil, leather jackets etc.

Plants4Presents An internet based business that supplies plants as gifts especially citrus and other fruit trees, vines, flowering plants and chillies.

About Alan Rae

Dr Alan Rae studied Biochemistry and carried out research on plant growth at the University of Oxford. He had a small-holding in Shropshire for 10 years in the 70s and 80s but has spent most of his working life applying IT and the internet to small business growth and marketing.

6 years ago he set up Free Spirits Ltd with his wife and long term business partner Isobel. They sell plants and biological controls online and are Soil Association certified organic growers of vegetables from their Nursery, Fletching Glasshouses. Alan is currently Horticultural Workforce Champion for the South East Region.

He is a chartered Fellow and former Regional Chair of the Chartered Institute of Marketing  an associate of the Market Research Society and a WorkWise adviser.
